Cures for Chatterphilia and Listnophobia

In the olden days, fewer students suffered from chatterphilia, the love of talking in class at the wrong times, and listnophobia, the inability to hear directions or explanations. Additionally, the "I didn't do my homework" syndrome was non-existent.

Why?  Was it because of the old fashioned punishments that teachers could use?  Was it because "Wait 'til your father comes home" was used?

In class today I told you about a certain somebody who had to put her little nose in a corner when she was 6.  Then we got to talking about "punishments in the olden days."

Feel free to share below what  you learn about parent and grandparent comments on how "it used to be" in the consequence department. Don't tell personal stories without permission.  :)

  3. When my mom was in kindergarten, she saw someone got rapped on the bottom with a ruler. In elementary, the fifth grade teacher was also the principal and he carried a wooden paddle around.

  6. My mom said that she talked too much in school, and they would send notes home for her parents to sign. She says it's not much different from today, but my grandma on my mom's side went to Catholic school and had more harsh punishments. She said the nuns would smack bad students with a ruler and put a dunce cap on them and put them in the corner.

  7. When I asked my dad he said he would get detention, the belt, modern things, So I called my grandma and she said that they would get hit with rulers in the arm, legs, and their bottoms. She also said that they would need to write about 1 sentence about their wrong doing 100-200 times, depending on what they did wrong.

  8. My grandpa loves to tell us about when he was a kid. One of the classics is when a boy in his class gave the teacher a better paddle with holes to make it hurt more. The teacher then said thank you and tested the paddle out on the poor kid. "Wham!" Grandpa always says.

  9. When my dad talked in class, the teacher would do one of several things. Hitting with a ruler, standing in the corner, and even throwing wooden chalkboard earasers across the room at them. But instead of writing lines normally, the teacher would give him one of those pens the different colors, which you change by pressing different buttons. The teacher would make him write 200 lines, but with each letter being a different color! So they would be sitting there for an hour, continuously changing the colors
